Camarillo ADU Guide: Costs, Permits and Design

Camarillo requires a solar electric system on new detached ADUs, which is the requirement that surprises homeowners here most often. Setbacks are four feet from rear and interior side property lines for new construction, conversions of legally established structures are generally exempt, and parking may not exceed one space per bedroom.

The solar requirement

New detached ADUs in Camarillo require a solar electric system. It is a real line item, and it is regularly missing from the number a homeowner arrived with after using a generic online cost calculator.

Converting an existing structure is treated differently from new construction.

The rest of the standards

  • Setbacks. Four feet from rear and interior side property lines for new construction on a single-family property.
  • Conversions. Legally established structures converted into an ADU are generally exempt from those setbacks.
  • Height. Up to 16 feet detached, up to 25 feet attached. Height limits generally do not apply to conversions.
  • Lot coverage. Cannot be used to prohibit an ADU of up to 800 square feet at 16 feet meeting the four-foot setbacks.
  • Parking. May not exceed one space per bedroom.
  • Junior ADUs. Capped at 500 square feet.

Camarillo neighborhoods

Mission Oaks and Springville. Generous rear yards make detached units practical.

Camarillo Heights. Slope means grading, drainage and sometimes retaining walls.

Old Town. Smaller, older lots where a garage conversion is frequently the sensible route.
